BTS: The Global Shining Star Flower Prince (By: Carys)

As we all know, music is the organization of sound to make compilations of form, peace, melody, rhythm, or expressive contents. Music can be of many types, such as classical, pop, jazz, rock, and more. One of the most prominent music genres is K-POP.

K-POP, or Korean Pop, is a form of well-known music originating from South Korea. It had been renowned since the 1990s and exists as an element of youth subcultures. With Korean celebrities, or musicians bring some influences from Western dance music, contemporary R and B, hip-hop and rock. In this essay, I’m not going to elaborate more about K-POP, I’m going to talk about my favourite K-POP group----------BTS, and I’m sure you all know and will love them, as they will have a stupendous comeback and reunition next month, June this year after 3 years hiatus and military services. BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, or Bulletproof Boys Scout, Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean(Hanja), is a South Korean boy band debuted in the year 2013. This band consists of seven members————Jin (Kim Seok Jin), RM (Kim Nam Joon), J-Hope (Jung Ho Seok), Suga (Min Yoon Gi), Jimin (Park Ji Min), V (Kim Tae Hyung) and Jungkook (Jeon Jung Kook).      For their group name, J-Hope signifies as the motivation to refrain stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that make purposes on juveniles like bullet. In Japanese(Kanji), the name is called as Bōdan Shōnendan. Later, in the year 2017, BTS declared their name could be also called as “Beyond the Scene” to become a part of their latest brand identity. So, the meaning behind the name was extended to encompass the idea of development “from a child to adult who becomes courageous, optimistic and open-minded to face forward”. For their fandom name, it was called ARMY and the team colour was purple. They co-write and create their own products. Originally, their songs and dances genres were hip-hop, but they think of ideas and expand their musical design to collaborate with an immense range of genres, while their lyrics emphasize themes that comprise mental health, the struggles of youth during school periods, the coming of ages, the journeys about self-love, individualism, and the results of pride and identification. Their discographies and adjacent works have featured literature, philosophies, and psychologies, and consists of a productive universal storyline.

All music bands have their own histories and backstories. Do you want to know about BTS’s early life and history? Here it goes-------------------------------------------------------------The group was formed in the year 2010, when Bang Si-Hyuk, CEO, or the founder of a label entertainment, Big Hits decided to create a hip-hop group around RM, an underground rapper who was popular on the music scenario in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. At that moment, physical albums sales were all declining and digital revenues were not high enough for compensation. Looking at the needs of diversification of income streams, Bang Si-Hyuk wanted to form an idol band instead, because of the function for the live concert performances and affectionate supports from fans of such groups. Most of his trainees opposed becoming part of the idol group, but the remaining, J-Hope, RM, and Suga maintained. Bang was a very open-minded businessman. He selected to vary from common, highly restricted bands and form one where the members would be personal rather than ensemble and express themselves freely. Auditions were organized with decisions to launch the following year. The group members lived, practiced together up to 15 hours a day, and had their first performances before a minuscule crowd of industry insiders in the year 2013, which is the year of the band’s debut.

BTS’s performances by Big Hits Entertainment, rather than one of the three entertainment companies that dominated K-POP at the same time, allowing the members to leeway and express their individuality and encouraging some inputs into their own music. This led to their first album------------------------------2 Cool 4 Skool released on June 12, 2013, with their song, “No More Dream” included inside. At first, it was not sold specifically great. Until when they made their stage debut on M Countdown with the single, “No More Dream”, the album approached the top five on South Korea’s Gaon Music Chart. On behalf of 2 Cool 4 Skool album, BTS applied an old-school hip-hop sound from the 1990s. The album’s production was followed by appearances on Korean music shows that garner reviewers’ and viewers’ attentions. According to the book on BTS written by Kathy Sprinkel, the song was “spotlighting youngsters’ apprehension while facing the lofty parental expectations, sending shock waves through the K-POP ranks. Here was the musical deed that wasn’t pulling any punches. What made them more extraordinary was that they had significant ideas, and they were fearless on themes that were claimed as taboos in South Korean Society and elsewhere.” BTS has been making a lot of success and contribution to the economy, and the world by producing many songs and albums. For instance, Dark and Wild in 2014, Wings in 2016, Map of The Soul: 7 in 2020. The most stream BTS’s album is Proof that was released in 2022, before they remained on hiatus for their solo projects and mandatory services. Even their own biographies are made into films, such as Burn the Stage: The Movie in 2018, BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas in 2023, Bring the Soul: The Movie in 2019 and Break the Silence: The Movie in 2020. BTS has starred in many online shows before, like Run BTS from 2015, BTS In the Scoop from 2020 to 2021 and BTS: Bon Voyage from 2016. What makes BTS more famous and loved by the people worldly was that they engaged in political and diplomacy activities carefully, besides most of their positive and meaningful lyrics that do not touch sensitive issues worldwide. On May 31, 2022, BTS visited Joe Biden, the president of USA at the White House to discuss the increase in anti-Asian hatreds and discriminations during the Covid-19 pandemic. They collaborated and modelled in many types of brands, which are Louis Vuitton, Samsung, Hyundai,  Seoul Tourism Ambassador, Coway, Kloud, PUMA, SNOW App,  MEDIHEAL, FILA, Baskin Robbins, McDonald’s, Mattel and more.

My favourite BTS member is Jung Kook(Jeon Jung Kook). In my opinion, he is the most charismatic member of the group. He is the main vocalist, lead dancer, sub-rapper, center and maknae (the youngest) of the group. He has a nickname-----------Bunny Kookie, as he is as friendly as a rabbit. He was born on September 1, 1997, in Busan, South Korea. His family consists of his parents and his older brother, Jeon Jung Hyun(born in 1995) who supported his music career since he was young. He studied at Baekyang Elementary and Middle School in Busan. After then, when he was an artiste trainee, he changed to attend Singu Middle School in Seoul. In the year 2011, he participated in an audition on behalf of the South Korean talent show, Superstar K in Daegu. Unfortunately, he was not chosen, but he was offered to cast by 7 entertainment companies. Therefore, he was selected to become Big Hits Entertainment’s trainee after looking at RM, who was his current bandmate and leader of the group performed. To work his dance flair and prepare for his debut, he went to Los Angeles, USA, in summer 2012 for training from Movement Lifestyle, and in June 2012, he appeared in 2AM’s Jo Kwon’s “I’m Da One” music video and became a backup dancer for Glam before his debut. Right after his debut, he, together with his fellow bandmates, have received many desired and glorious music awards and became the major influence globally, like American Music Award for Artist Of The Year, Seoul Music Awards Daesang Award, Golden Disc Award Song Of The Year and more. When BTS was on hiatus, he produced an album, “Golden” with many solo songs inside, like Standing Next To You, Seven, Too Much, 3D, Closer To You and more. He even became a model and ambassador for certain brands by himself, which are Calvin Klein, XBOX and Godiva.

In conclusion, BTS is the most prominent and best celebrity I have ever met. They are as handsome as a prince. Thus, I hope BTS the best and waiting for their outstanding comeback in next month, June this year, and remember to come to Malaysia for concert next year when you announce world tour💜💜💜
