Earthquakes, also known as quake, tremor, or temblor, are the shaking of the Earth's surface as a consequence from an abrupt release of energy in the
lithosphere that makes
seismic waves. They can range in
intensity, from those so weak they cannot be felt, to those sufficient to propel objects and people into the air, devastate critical infrastructure, and wreak destruction across the whole metropolis. The
seismic activity of an area is the frequency, type, and size of earthquakes experienced over a particular time. The seismicity at a particular place in the Earth is the average rate of seismic energy release per unit volume. In its most general sense, the term, earthquake is used to describe any seismic event that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes can happen naturally or be induced by human activities, like mining, fracking, and nuclear weapons testing. The initial point of rupture is called as the
hypocenter or focus, while the ground level directly above it is the
epicenter. Earthquakes are primarily caused by
geological faults, but also by volcanism, landslides, and other seismic events. The aim of writing this is to create public awareness about earthquakes, as one of my country's state,
Johor is having now. 3 days ago, its magnitude is 4.1. But now, it reduces to 3.2. It became mild. What a great news! Anyway, to prevent earthquakes from happening, we should identify hazards, establishing safer structures, and providing education on
earthquakes safety. No earthquakes, we feel safe!
